Get the salary you deserve - 5 salary negotiation tips
I have worked for a couple of companies in my very short working career thus far (4 years) , but I have felt like I am not getting what needs to come my why all too often. I would like to share some ideas and thoughts on how to negotiate a better salary with prospective employers.
Well, here you go - Five tips to negotiating a better salary:
- Patience is key - Waiting for the perfect time to strike is what makes or breaks a successful salary negotiation. Unfortunately there is no clear cut way of knowing when to strike, listen out for words like “We want you” or “Must have you at our company”. Those are the queues you need to look for and the pounce!
- Find out the maximum salary offer are prepared to make - Don’t sell yourself short, employers usually state between which guidelines they are willing to move. Go for the higher amount and not the lower one! If you are confident, they will be too.
- Do your homework - Find out what the industry is paying, the important thing is that you must not guess. You must have the facts, that is the only way they’ll take you seriously.
- Consider the complete salary package - Will you receive a medical contribution, IRA, disability fund or any other company perks? Find out what exactly they will be adding to your package as well as future increases and raises. These company policies should most definitely be considered when making you final decision.
- Get it in writing - Although legally a verbal agreement should stick, get it in writing so that no one is unclear on what was promised and agreed upon.
The main idea is to always cover your back, do some research, always get everything in writing and don’t back down. You must show confidence in your own abilities and your future employer will show respect and treat you accordingly.
